10 Questions to Help You Reflect on Your Past Year

I always love this time of year - fresh snow on the ground, spending time with family and friends, and creating new years resolutions I probably won't keep - ya feel me?

Another one of my favorite things about the end of the year is reviewing the past 12 months to help me plan the next 12. This past week I went over everything I did in 2017 - all of the portrait sessions, email newsletters, blog posts, events attended, what I enjoyed working on, what drained me, and what I want to do more of next year.

Yeah, it was a pretty long list. ;)

What was the reason for going over all that? Well, I think it's valuable to go over past metrics to plan an even better next year than the previous one - why would I want to keep spending my time working on projects that I didn't enjoy and didn't help me to reach my goals? Maybe those projects even got in the way of me reaching my goals!

Here are a few of the questions I reflected on in my life and business from the last year to help guide me in my decision making in the coming year. Feel free to find the ones that resonate with you and let them help you reflect on where you've been in 2017 and where you want to go in 2018!

Reflection Questions

  • What are you most proud of from this year?

  • What do you wish there had been less of?

  • What do you wish there had been more of?

  • What did you feel was a turning point or influential moment for you?

  • What do you wish you had spent more time on?

Accomplishment Reflections

One thing that I want to encourage you to do is to think about your accomplishments for the year in addition to reflecting on the questions above. There's always room for improvement, but there's also room for self appreciation and celebration!

For example, I was a little disappointed that I didn't create as many freebies for creative entrepreneurs as I wanted to this year, but that was because I was busy graduating college at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago which was an equally (if not more) massive accomplishment in my growth. Give yourself a little love and celebrate what you've accomplished this past year!

  • What was one goal you set for the past year that you accomplished?

  • How did you surprise yourself?

  • What did you push yourself in this year?

  • What scary thing did you do to chase your dream?

  • What did you do for your personal growth?
